Hobson City, Alabama, is the second incorporated all-black, self-governed city in America. Nevertheless, its history is one mired in both the symbolic and physical violence against African Americans, which haunts America to this day. To the extent that Hobson City is a symbol for much of America, we must be truthful in our witness: The love for African America does not overflow. The value of these beautiful people is not understood. “The Dream” has not been fulfilled.
Our work in Hobson City is focused on helping it fulfill its dream for the first time. Equally important, we will demonstrate that Hobson City’s dream is a dream for all Americans. There is a particular reason why this is possible: Out of all of Rubicon Seven’s global projects and site visits over the years, they are the first community that could very clearly articulate what makes them unique. It is a complicated question that we spend a lot of time exploring with our clients; fulfilling our dreams must be aligned with honestly understanding who we are. Hobson City has a beautiful understanding of its community, and we have a beautiful starting place from which to develop the infrastructure, the ecology, and the people.
Our Hobson City project will be a project for America. If we all go far in exploring ourselves, we will also go very far in fulfilling “The Dream.” As we see in all our work in regenerative development, humans are the only ones holding us back from creating a much better and realistic future.
